Once upon a January at the dawning of the day
a lady came across the sea - a lady of the north they say.
Still a child in her emotions - though she seemed a woman grown.
Unaware her footsteps led her along a road she'd never known...
When first she saw him in her mind she was flyin'!
Weak with laughter - high on wine.
She caught a smile that set her senses reeling...
It struck like lightening, yet it froze her spine.
But by the burning heat of summer she drank that smile like cooling water.
It was the touch that turned her world to gold as the autumn days grew shorter...
But his cool, his calm, his distance, made a deep impression.
It stole her sleep. She just couldn't see. She was blinded by obsession.
The more she failed to reach him, the more the lady tried.
When she saw him with his woman, it twisted her inside.
She wove bright fantasies that she could hide in - to try to justify her bitter moods.
Til in one moment of unguarded vision she saw the pain she caused him in the name of love.
Saw herself, the fool - as others saw her. Tired to reason with her senses...
Then spring returned with its peacock mornings - its poems, passions and pretenses....
The earth was warm, the winter soon forgotten - its darkness faded like a childhood dream.
The play seemed ended. How could they know they were still playing out the opening scene?
And oh they played it to perfection! Both their freedom wildly flaunted...
Closely watching each reaction - they tried and tested, teased and taunted....
She flattered him, she flirted - but most of all she kept control...
She wrote the lines and learned them well - but she was miscast in the role...
For she tried to play the good-time girl who didn't give a damn
but if she wanted to play at make-believe, she should have chosen another man....
